On Monday, September 22, 2014 at about 4:45 pm members of the Niagara Regional Police Service were called to the Niagara Detention Centre in Thorold to investigate a serious injury sustained by an inmate.  The injured inmate was a detainee of the Canada Border Services Agency.

The inmate was transported by the Niagara Emergency Medical Service to the Greater Niagara General Hospital.  He was listed in critical condition and remained in the Intensive Care Unit.  On September 27, 2014 he succumbed to his injuries.

Members of the Niagara Regional Police 1 District Detective Office and the Forensic Services Unit conducted an investigation into the incident at the Niagara Detention Centre.  The inmate’s injuries were not suspected to be the result of foul play.  The Office of the Chief Coroner is charged with the investigation into the inmate’s death.
