On Wednesday, December 31st, 2014 members of the Special Enforcement Unit conducted a festive RIDE throughout the Niagara Region and over the course of the night approximately 300 vehicles were checked and of those drivers 19 roadside breath samples were taken.

Police say as a result of the exercise 1 driver was arrested for Over 80mg, 1 driver was charged with being impaired by drugs, 1 driver was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample, 1 driver was charge with driving while disqualified, and 1 driver received a 3 day suspension. In addition 12 Provincial Offence charges were laid.

At the conclusion of the RIDE an officer was driving back to district on the QEW when a driver passed the marked cruiser while travelling 157km/hr in the 100km/hr zone. The driver was stopped and charged with stunting and provided breath samples registering 1.5 times the legal limit of 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. Criminal charges were laid.

The Niagara Regional Police remain committed to the safety of the people travelling the roadways of the Niagara Region. The RIDE campaign will continue on into the new year.
