Police say, at approximately 9:19 PM on Saturday, April 30th, 2016, the Niagara Emergency Medical Services, Niagara Regional Police Service and Pelham Fire Services were dispatched for a multi vehicle collision on Highway 20, east of Victoria Avenue in the Town of Pelham, within the Region of Niagara, Ontario.

 

Initial investigation revealed that a 2006 GMC Sierra with dual rear wheels was travelling westbound on Highway 20 when the driver’s side rear tires broke free from the vehicle. At the same time there were three east bound vehicles on Highway 20. The first vehicle was a 2006 Toyota Corolla that was struck by debris from the wheel, the second vehicle was a 2005 Toyota Corolla that was struck by a tire, the third vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, was also struck by a tire. The 62-year-old male driver of the Malibu, a resident of York, Ontario, suffered a fatal injury. The vehicle then crossed into the westbound lane and collided head on with a west bound 2001 Honda Civic. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

The female passenger in the Malibu suffered serious injuries and was transported by air ambulance to a Hamilton Health Sciences Hospital where she remains in stable condition. The female passenger of the Honda was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. All other parties involved in this collision were uninjured.

This collision remains under investigation by the Coroner’s Office and Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit.
