At approximately 1:15 AM on Friday the 13th of May, 2016, the Niagara Regional Police Service, St. Catharines Fire Services and Niagara Emergency Medical Services were dispatched for a head on collision involving two motor vehicles in the intersection of Ontario Street and Meadowvale Drive in the City of St. Catharines, in the Region of Niagara, Ontario.


Police say, initial investigation revealed that 40-year-old Ocean Fairchild of Sherkston, Ontario was operating his 2003 Ford Escape northbound on Ontario Street at a high rate of speed while under the influence of alcohol. After crossing over the QEW overpass he failed to negotiate the bend in the roadway and the Ford collided head on with a 2001 Buick Century that was southbound. The Buick was being driven by a 54-year-old female from Niagara Falls who also had a 64-year-old female passenger.

Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles and had to be extricated by Fire Services before being transported to hospital by ambulance. Fairchild suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital while the female driver was transferred to a Hamilton Health Sciences with life threatening injuries. The female passenger attended the Niagara Health Systems and was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.

Fairchild was subsequently arrested and charged with the Criminal Code Offence of Impaired Driving Cause Bodily Harm before being released. Both of the vehicles sustained extensive damage.

This collision remains under investigation by Detectives of the Niagara Regional Police Services Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Forensic Services Unit.
