Police say, shortly after midnight on August 19, 2016 members of the Niagara Regional Police Service along with Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to 911 calls in the area of Old Pine Trail in St. Catharines. Callers reported that a male had been stabbed following a disturbance in one of the residential buildings in the complex.

 

Police and Paramedics located the victim with injuries to his abdomen and provided emergency first aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but his condition has since been upgraded to stable.

Uniform Patrol members supported by the Emergency Task Unit and Canine Unit contained a residence and cordoned off a part of a building and grounds. Following a short containment operation the suspect surrendered to police and was taken into custody without incident and investigators from the #1 District Detective Office and the Forensic Services Unit continued the investigation, which resulted in the execution of a search warrant at the residence. A number of knives and a flare gun were seized in connection with this incident.

Investigators arrested and charged the following persons in relation to this investigation:

18 year old resident of St. Catharines Rashaun Nicholson has been charged with:

Aggravated Assault contrary to Section 268(1) of the Criminal Code

Mischief Endangering Life contrary to Section 430(2) of the Criminal Code

18 year old resident of St. Catharines Kyler Hayes has been charged with:

Criminal Harassment contrary to Section 264(1) of the Criminal Code

Possession of a Weapon contrary to Section 88(1) of the Criminal Code

Disguise with Intent contrary to Section 351(2) of the Criminal Code

Rashaun Nicholson appeared in St. Catharines Bail Court on August 19, 2016.

Kyler Hayes was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The investigation continues and it is anticipated that one more person will be charged in connection with this incident.
