Niagara Regional Police have released the name of a man whom they say was found dead on the shore of the recreational canal in Welland on Tuesday.

Long time Welland resident,  51-year-old Dominic Mercuri, has been identified as the individual that was discovered partially in the water by the Welland SCUBA Park near the Lincoln Street Bridge by two fisherman.

The NRP marine unit, along with the detectives’ office and the forensic services unit were called in to assist and police said the body does not appear to have been in the water for a long time; however exactly how long is not yet known.

A post mortem done on Wednesday, Dec. 28, concluded that the cause of death was not suspicious in nature.

Now that police have released the name of the individual, they are hoping that someone from the public will come forward with more information about Mercuri so that they can retrace his steps and find out what happened .

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mercuri leading up to his untimely death are asked to contact the Welland detective office at 905-688-4111, ext. 3355 to assist investigators in developing a timeline.
