Police say in January of 2017, members of the Welland Street Crime Unit began investigating a federal parolee after information was received that he was actively trafficking methamphetamine in the City of Welland.  The investigation quickly expanded as members of the criminal network were identified.

 

Assisting with the investigation were Detectives from Welland, and the Intelligence Unit, as well as officers assigned to uniform patrol and the Repeat Offenders Parole Enforcement Squad.

During the course of the investigation dubbed Project Iceberg, six CDSA search warrants were granted which led to over $40,000 in drug seizures.  In total police seized; 300 grams of methamphetamine, 24 grams of cocaine, 50 Percocet tablets, and small marihuana grow operation.    In addition to the drugs, officers also seized a handgun, rifle, and ammunition as well as a quantity of cash and trafficking indicators.

Wayne Sodtka , a 30 year old resident of Welland was charged with the following:

Natasha Smagata, a 31 year old resident of Welland was charged with the following:

Scotty Mitchel, a 23 year old resident of Welland was charged with the following:

Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Oxycodone
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Marihuana
Unlawfully Produce Marihuana
Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Firearm
Unauthorized Possession of a Non-Restricted Firearm
Careless Storage (two counts)
Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Under  $5,000
