Police say on March 27, 2017, at approximately 3:30 pm, officers from the 1 District St. Catharines office of the Niagara Regional Police Service responded to a housing complex in the area of Welland Avenue and Cushman Road in St. Catharines for a report of a sexual assault that had just occurred.

 

Uniform officers and detectives for the NRPS Child Abuse Unit started an investigation into an allegation that a 16 year old male who resided in the area, sexually assaulted a 8 year old female. It is believed the victim was targeted by the male youth.

Officers located the youth and he was arrested.  He was transported to the NRPS Prisoner Management Unit and charged with:

Sexual Assault (2 Counts)
Sexual Interference (2 Counts)
Fail to Comply with a Youth Probation Order

The youth attended a bail hearing on March 28, 2017, at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines and the investigation remains ongoing by detectives from the NRPS Child Abuse Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 905-688-4111 extension 5100. The NRPS is prohibited from releasing the identity of the 16 year old male youth based on the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
