Niagara Regional Police say that as a result of a criminal investigation, on September 29, NRPS Constable Matthew Belzil was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

 

3 counts of Assault
2 counts of Utter Threats
2 counts of Mischief
1 count of Sexual Assault

The incident occurred while the officer was off duty and Constable Belzil has been held in custody pending a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice on Saturday September 30, 2017 via video link at the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton.

Constable Belzil has been a police officer with the NRPS for 11 years, and is presently assigned to uniform patrol. In accordance with the Police Services Act of Ontario, Constable Belzil has been suspended with pay pending further investigation.

As the matter is now before the courts, police say that no further comment or details will be provided.
