As we reported earlier, a body was recovered from the Welland Recreational Waterway in the area of the Lincoln Street Bridge on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, between 5-9 pm.  

 

Police say in the latest update to the case that the investigation into the tragic circumstances of this incident is still ongoing, with Detectives continuing to identify and interview persons who may have knowledge of the matter.

As of today’s date, an Apple iPhone and a pair of running shoes belonging to the deceased are outstanding. The shoes are described as grey Nike Lebron James running shoes with lime green piping and lime green soles. See below pics from police website:

Police are aware that the incident has attracted significant social media interest, with unsubstantiated rumours and information being circulated.

To date, police have no information, or any evidence, to suggest that the drowning of the deceased was caused by any criminal act.

The Niagara Regional Police are asking for the public’s assistance with an ongoing investigation after a body was recovered from the Welland Recreational Waterway. Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have been in the area of the Lincoln Street Bridge on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, between the hours of 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm.

On May 30, 2018, Niagara Regional Police began investigating a missing person call for service. A Welland youth had been reported missing by his family after he failed to return home the previous evening.

Police began searching in the area of the Lincoln Street Bridge; one of the last locations where the youth was last seen. The Service Underwater Search and Rescue Unit was called in to assist with the investigation.

At approximately 6:20 pm, the youth male was located in the Recreational Waterway near the Lincoln Street Bridge. The Regional Coroner was notified of the recovery and the body was removed from the water. An autopsy has been scheduled to assist in determining the cause of death.

The family of the deceased have been notified of the recovery. At the request of the family, the identity of the youth is not being released at this time.
