On the evening of Saturday February 7th, 2016 members of the Niagara Regional Police Service, Special Enforcement Unit conducted a R.I.D.E. check in the cities of Niagara Falls and St. Catharines.  Officers stopped approximately 450 vehicles. Of those drivers stopped 8 were required to provide breath samples for suspected alcohol consumption which resulted in 1 driver being arrested for having consumed over the legal limit of alcohol to operate a motor vehicle (over .80mgs).

Another driver was issued a 3 day licence suspension after registering an alert on an approved screening device. Numerous fines were issued to drivers in contravention of the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act , including one class G1 licenced driver operating his vehicle without being in the accompany of a class G licence holder.

The Niagara Regional Police Service remain committed to reducing Impaired Driving Offences through education and the apprehension of offenders through enforcement programs like R.I.D.E. Impaired driving is still the leading criminal offence causing deaths in Canada.

This initiative has been made possible, in part, as a result of grant funding from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services as part of the Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E) program.
