On Sunday August 26, 2018, at about 5:20 pm,  Niagara Regional Police Service along with the Fort Erie Fire Service and Niagara Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of a possible double drowning.

 

911 calls requested emergency services to the Crystal Beach boat launch in Fort Erie where it was found that a 14 year old female saw a personal water craft (PWC) driving in circles in Lake Erie and then drove her own PWC to investigate and located two unconscious males floating in the water.

The female drove back to shore to get additional assistance from her family and another member of the public and citizen rescuers used their PWCs and returned to the scene, recovering both males and bringing them to shore where resuscitation efforts were started.

Through these efforts, one of the males, a forty one year old from Scarborough regained consciousness and was transported to a local hospital. He was treated for hypothermia and expected to make a full recovery.  The second male, a fifty year old from Germany, remained In critical condition at the scene and was transported to a local hospital and despite exhaustive resuscitative efforts he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The identity of the deceased is not being released.

This incident remains under investigation by detectives from the 5 District Detective Office and the Marine Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-688-4111 extension 2322.
