Recreational cannabis was legalized Oct. 17, 2018 by the federal government.

The Ontario Cannabis Store opened online on Oct. 17, 2018, but the Ontario government is moving forward with a regulated private retail model for cannabis stores.

The Provincial Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) is charged with licencing, regulating and enforcement of private cannabis retail stores and will begin accepting applications for new stores in December of 2018, with the intent to have private retail cannabis stores operational by April 1, 2019.

On January 14, 2019, City Council of St. Catharines will consider a report to opt-in or opt-out of hosting retail cannabis stores in St.Catharines and as a tee up to that, the City is seeking feedback from residents.

First up, there is a meeting tonight at City Hall at 6 pm where residents will have a chance to voice their support or opposition to recreational cannabis shops.  Additionally online, there is a survey that can be taken which is open until this Friday Dec. 14, 2018.
