The Niagara Regional Police Service, in partnership with Niagara Parks Police and St. Catharines Fire Services and supported by the Niagara Region, will officially launched Next Generation 9‑1‑1 (NG9‑1‑1) as of March 4, 2026.
This is reported to be a major upgrade that marks a transformative step forward in public safety, emergency response, and modern communication infrastructure across Niagara.
A Modernized 9‑1‑1 System
NG9‑1‑1 is a multi‑phase modernization of Canada’s traditional emergency network. While the way residents dial 9‑1‑1 remains the same, the new system—powered by Bell and Motorola Solutions—introduces advanced capabilities designed to improve speed, accuracy, and reliability.
Key enhancements include:
- More accurate caller data, helping operators quickly pinpoint location and phone information.
- Stronger cybersecurity and system reliability, ensuring uninterrupted emergency access.
- Expanded backup capabilities, allowing the system to remain operational even during failures.
- Future‑ready features, including real‑time text and live video calling for emergencies.
Leadership Perspective
“The successful implementation of Next Generation 9‑1‑1 marks a significant advancement in how we connect with those in need,” said NRPS Chief of Police Bill Fordy. “This modernization ensures our emergency communications infrastructure is faster, more resilient, and ready for future technology. I want to acknowledge the dedication of our Project Team, Communications Unit, Information Technology Team, and everyone involved. Their work directly strengthens our ability to respond when every second counts.”
Smarter Technology for Faster Response
Motorola Solutions’ upgraded platform includes intelligent features such as automatic call-backs for dropped 9‑1‑1 calls, allowing callers to quickly confirm whether they are experiencing an emergency. This helps dispatchers stay focused on active, high‑priority situations while improving overall response times for the community.
Provincial Support
Since 2022, the Ontario government has invested over $7.7 million to support the NG9‑1‑1 transition for Niagara Regional Police Service, St. Catharines Fire Services, and Niagara Parks Police.
“Upgrading Ontario’s public safety communications will be a game changer,” said Hon. Michael Kerzner, Solicitor General of Ontario. “Next Generation 9‑1‑1 gives first responders real‑time, life‑saving information, leading to faster and more effective emergency response. Our government is proud to support Niagara in adopting this technology, ensuring more calls are answered, more lives are saved, and communities can rely on emergency services when it matters most.”
Industry Recognition
“The Niagara Regional Police Service is modernizing its 9‑1‑1 infrastructure to better support community members and visitors with fast, reliable, and informed emergency response,” said Michael Martin, President of Motorola Solutions Canada. “We congratulate the NRPS team on achieving this milestone and bringing the benefits of advanced, resilient NG9‑1‑1 technology to the Region.”
What Residents Need to Know
The public will not experience any change in how they place or receive 9‑1‑1 calls. In an emergency, continue to dial 9‑1‑1 as usual.
