The 19 year old man shot and killed trying to assist another man being accosted in Hamilton Saturday night has now been identified as Yosif Al- Hasnawi,  a Brock University student.  The shooting took place near a mosque in the area.

Police say witnesses report that the man Al- Hasnawi was trying to help was a senior who was being confronted by two men .  When he tried to intervene, he was shot and the search is still on for two white males in their 20’s in connection with the shooting.

They’re described as:

  • A white male in his 20s with a medium to darker complexion, black hair and a medium build. His hair was long with a ponytail wrapped at the top of his head. He wore a hood, backpack and jeans.
  • A white male in his 20s with a bald/shaved head. He was shorter than the first suspect and had a light complexion. He was also heavier than the first suspect and wore a hoodie and jeans.

Questions About Paramedics on Scene

Further questions have now also arisen in the investigation including how paramedics treated the victim. Paramedics say they won’t comment on the specific case, citing the police investigation

Witnesses which include a local Muslim leader, Amin Al-Tahir told the CBC he watched as paramedics told Al-Hasnawi he was fine, even though the university student said “I can’t breathe.”

Another witness backs up this statement saying paramedics told him it was just a wound from a pellet gun and that he would be fine.

The teen was taken to hospital and later died from his injuries.

Anyone with information should call Det. Doug Jonovich at 905-546-4863.
