This morning at 7:19 am, police were called to a downtown Welland address for a report of a stabbing which had just occurred.

Investigation revealed that the suspect had forced his way into an apartment unit, where he assaulted the 54 year old tenant with a knife. He went on to damage furniture in the apartment with the knife and then fled on foot.

The stabbing injury to the victim was found to be relatively minor and did not require medical treatment.

The suspect was located in a neighbouring apartment unit and taken into custody without incident.

Police say they have charged Peter Thomas, 40 years, of Welland, with Assault with a Weapon, Forcible Entry, Utter Threats, Mischief Under $5000 and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. He is currently in custody in Niagara Falls awaiting a Bail Hearing.
