Not everyone has a sweetheart to celebrate Valentines with.  Maybe that “someone to love” for you is actually a pet who can become your forever friend.

The Lincoln County Humane Society is teaming up with PetSmart for a three-day Adoption event on Friday, 13th February, Saturday, February 14th (Valentine’s Day), through Sunday, 15th February.  On Friday and Saturday the PetSmart on YMCA drive near Home Depot in the Fairview Mall will be open from 9 am to 9 pm.  On Sunday it’s open from 9 am to 6 pm.  There will be many homeless dogs and cats for you to choose from. (pictured below”Sparky” adopted from LCHS 2 years ago)

The earliest reference to Valentine’s Day associates it with birds and animals.  It is a poem by the mediaeval poet Geoffrey Chaucer, famous for his Canterbury Tales.  It is set in the early spring and involves the pairing off of animals and birds by Nature.  It is called “The Parliament of Birds,” and in it a committee of birds assists Nature in the springtime choosing of mates.A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry.  Today’s association of St. Valentine’s Day – celebrated by several Christian denominations – with flowers and other gifts signifying love did not begin until the 1700s.

Maybe the best Valentine’s gift you can give works two ways:  you bring a homeless animal into your home, and that animal gives back unconditional love. Don’t miss this adoption event at PetSmart.  While you’re there you can check out the amazing animal wares and watch dogs getting groomed through a large picture window.  A great outing for kids.  And if you have a dog, it is welcome to come with you into the store.  On a leash, of course.

Did You Know? PetSmart makes a donation to the LCHS for each adoption during a National Adoption Event?  PetSmart also has rescue agency and shelter cats for adoption in its store every day. (picured Cupid the cat and Wendell the dog both up for adoption at LCHS).
