Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Niagara Falls – Welland – Southern Niagara Region
  • St. Catharines – Grimsby – Northern Niagara Region

A taste of wet fall weather for most of Southern Ontario with an unseasonably cool wind-driven rain affecting many areas.

A low pressure system arriving today from the American Midwest will spread rain across Southern Ontario from west to east through the day. The rain has begun over Southwestern Ontario this morning and will work its way eastward reaching Eastern Ontario tonight. An isolated thunderstorm may accompany the rain today over areas near Lake Erie.

Latest indications suggest a soaking rainfall across most of the area from this unseasonably strong low pressure which will track just south of the Lower Great Lakes into the Northeastern United States by Sunday night. This is a track that is quite uncommon during the summer in the Great Lakes area.

Regions from Windsor to the Golden Horseshoe will likely receive rainfall amounts totalling 30 to 60 millimetres by Sunday evening. Lesser amounts, in the 20 to 40 millimetre range, are expected over Central and Eastern Ontario. Areas farther north, to the northeast of Georgian Bay, should receive even less rain as they will be near the northern edge of this weather system.

Additionally, strong northeasterly winds are expected to develop with gusts generally in the 50 to 70 km/h range with the strongest winds along the Lower Great Lakes.

Latest indications suggest the rain will come to an end beginning Sunday morning over Southwestern Ontario, and Sunday night in remaining regions.
