It is a long weekend of very hot weather with a HEAT WARNING in effect according to Environment Canada.

Several days of maximum temperatures of 30 degrees celsius is expected to occur beginning today and continuing through Monday over the Labour Day long weekend. There will be little relief at night with temperatures falling into the low twenties. This prolonged heat event may produce much discomfort for those who may not have access to a cool or air-conditioned place.

While extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses, health risks are greatest for – older adults – infants and young children – people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses – people who work in the heat – people who exercise in the heat – people without access to air conditioning and – homeless people.

Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include – dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting – headache – rapid breathing and heartbeat – extreme thirst and – decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine. If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Take a break from the heat by spending a few hours in a cool place. It could be a tree-shaded area, swimming facility or an air-conditioned spot such as a public building, shopping mall, grocery store, place of worship or public library.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
