It’s been a hot but beautiful August in Niagara so far!
If part of your summer fun includes hitting the roads on a motorcycle, it’s important to pay particular attention to the heat factor so that you can ride safely says expert Liz Jansen.*
“Exposure to direct sun, heat and the wind all increase the rate at which we lose water naturally through perspiration and breathing, so the onset of heat exhaustion can be insidious. But, the good news is a few easy steps can help you stay well hydrated when riding in hot weather!”
Jansen’s top tips:
– Wear light coloured clothing – including your helmet
– Layer your clothing so you can adjust as the temperature changes
– Drink plenty of fluids – pure water is best
– Start drinking well ahead of your ride – the effects of dehydration are cumulative
– Install a cup-holder or use a hands-free Camelback. You can also store it in the tank bag rather than on my back and it works just fine
– Stop frequently to rest, stretch, move around, drink water and cool down
– Start riding earlier and avoid riding during peak heat times
– Know the signs of dehydration: less frequent and darker urination, fatigue, headache, dizziness and cramps. Also, if you are not drinking water and it is hot and you are not sweating, be careful, this could be a sign that you are nearing heat stroke
Bottom Line: Warm, sunny weather and long days make summer an ideal time for motorcycling and being prepared means you can get the most out of it!

VENDORS: A different selection of vendors is on site each week with lots of interesting stuff on hand. Some of the vendors may include Looner Creations, Soules Classic Barber, Voxx Life, Up cycle, Grim City Tattoo, Peytons Favourites, Biketoberfest, Norwex, DoTerra Oils, Music Angel Hot Sauce and Send Out Cards.
Also: This week’s Bike Night will be supporting SPCA Welland & District and the mobile animal will be on site with pups & kittens!
