It is that time of year again where it’s hot and sunny out and everyone is out enjoying the nice weather and so we are going to hit on a subject that some folks still do not seem to understand!

With that being said our emergency dispatch team has been receiving calls every day about animals being left unattended in hot cars.

There is no excuse for leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle and this summer we need your help to share this important message and save lives.

Be a No Hot Pets ambassador this summer. Join thousands of Canadians who have already taken the No Hot Pets pledge online and receive your free car decal.

Be sure to spread the message on social media about the dangers of leaving your pet in your vehicle using the hashtag #nohotpets.

Visit nohotpets.ca to take the pledge!

You should never leave your dog alone in a car even with the car running and air conditioner on. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die. It’s not worth the risk, keep them at home or board them at a kennel/daycare if they cannot go with you.

See an animal unattended in a vehicle?  Report it! ACT FAST. SAVE A LIFE. If you spot an unattended pet in a vehicle that appears to be suffering from heat exhaustion, do not hesitate to:

•Call 310-SPCA (7722)

•Call your local Humane Society – 905-356-4404

•Call your local Police

Do not break the glass on your own

Take down the license plate number, color and make/model of car if possible. This will be important information so that local authorities can locate them easier and get the animal assistance as soon as possible.

The shelter is currently in need of non-colored kitten dry food –just brown kibble and canned cat food any kind. We also have a rabbit and guinea pig who would love some fresh veggies like kale and romaine lettuce. Share this article with your friends and family and spread the word.

We are also looking for volunteers for our adoption stores. If you can help, call the shelter or email humane@nfhs.ca.
